Blue Apron is one of the most popular meal delivery services available in the USA. In fact, this is one of the first food companies that started offering meal kits. They provide straightforward meal plans, and their services are geared toward developing cooks or people who find meal planning and prepping challenging.
Our next contender, Freshly, doesn’t fall behind in any of the categories. They focus on even more convenient food making by offering prepared meals which need only a few minutes of heating. Freshly recipes are designed to be crowd-pleasers aimed at people who enjoy rich and delicious food.
If you aren’t into choosing meals with Blue Apron, you don’t have to. Set up your general preferences and let your weekly box surprise you. Considering they have a nicely-designed meal kits packed with delicious ingredients, different styles and flavors, you won’t make a mistake.

When it comes to Freshly, they don’t necessarily focus on meal plans but the number of servings. They offer more than 50 recipes per week, while you can pick between 4 and 12 dishes based on your needs.
Both services offer prepping time, allowing you to choose how much time you want to spend in the kitchen. For instance, an average cooking time with Blue Apron meals is around 30 minutes, while with Freshly, you can have your food ready within minutes.
Also, both meal delivery services provide internationally inspired recipes. Blue Apron mainly includes American cuisine, as well as Mexican, Asian, Greek and Italian. On the other hand, among American food, Freshly will offer you Mexican, Middle Eastern, Asian, and Italian cuisine.

Recipes range between 480 and 1100 calories, and you can find nutrition facts on their website. Basically, each meal comes with a table to easily track your caloric intake. Neither excessively rich nor strictly healthful, Blue Apron tries to balance hedonism and pure nourishment.
Freshly performs even better in this department. You can find recipes ranging from 160 to 700 calories. Same as Blue Apron, each dish has clearly displayed caloric content, a number of carbs, fats, and proteins.

Blue Apron has more than 20 recipes to offer every week. This includes at least four vegetarian dishes and three meals in the Wellness category. On top of that, they have a great variety of proteins and veggies.
The ingredients they choose for their recipes are fresh and seasonal. You can select between four meal plans, with two and four services. Blue Apron offers traditional American cuisine but also recipes inspired by international cuisine.
With Freshly, you can order up to 12 meals per week, and they have different subscription plans suitable for various dietary preferences. Whether you are on a low-carb, keto, gluten-free, or low-calorie diet, you will find your match here.
There are a couple of plant-based options, but not as nearly as other services offer. The great thing about this service is that they provide more than 50 meals every week, allowing you plenty of variety.
We have to disappoint you with Blue Apron’s packaging. Even though everything is neatly packed in vacuum-sealed containers and stored in an insulated box, most of the packaging is made of plastic, while hardly any of it is recyclable.
This is something that Blue Apron is actively working on, and we expect they will be able to solve this issue soon.
On the other hand, Freshly’s packaging is entirely recyclable. Meals are packed in cardboard sleeves, and the cardboard delivery box and plastic metal trays are recyclable. They also use largely biodegradable insulation.
Both of the services charge a shipping fee. In terms of delivery days, Blue Apron delivers Monday through Saturday, while Freshly also offers Sunday delivery.
These two services were pretty tough rivals. But, to sum things up, Blue Apron offers meal kits and premium ingredients, including great low-calorie options and a different mix of cuisines.
On the other hand, Freshly had plenty of lunch and dinner options. You only have to choose your recipe, pick a delivery date, and heat your food when hungry. It's as simple as that.
So, who is the winner? In our option Freshly, due to convenience and the number of weekly meals they have on their menu.
