Epicured Review - Taste, Menu & Prices for Strict Diets

Does trying a doctor-recommended diet sounds like something you would skip instantly? Well, not everyone is lucky enough to have good gut health, and they must pay attention to the ingredients they consume.

While Epicured meal delivery service is designed to address the needs of people with Crohn, celiac, and IBS disease, it doesn’t mean their meals are less tasty. Crafted by Michelin-star chefs, their smoothies, entrees, and salads are never frozen, which means they can be heated upon arrival.

If you are on a special dietary regime, we suggest checking out our Epicured review! We tested their services for a week, so let’s see how they performed.

How It Works?

Epicured meals are ordered through their website, and obviously, this is a subscription meal delivery service. Their selections are a la carte, gluten-free, and low FODMAP. The company tends to focus on recurring deliveries, so you will keep receiving the same food unless you do something about it.

To place an order, you need to set up an account with some basic information, like payment methods, delivery info, etc. You can order individual meals or bundles, and this service does have a wide selection of entrees, salads, soups, sides, snacks, breakfast, and beverages.

While the least expensive dish on the menu is $9.99, other recipes can go up to $18,99, making this service cost-prohibitive for some. You can always change weekly deliveries, edit, skip or cancel meals through your account.

How to Choose a Meal in Epicured?

Epicured features an extensive menu, with approximately 30 heat-and-eat entries, eight bowls & salads, four soups, and more than 20 vegetable, grain, and protein sides. You can also get dessert, snacks, breakfast, and drinks. Their all recipes are gluten-free and have low FODMAP.

In some cases, you will be able to choose the type of protein you want in your meals, like tofu, beef, fish, or poultry, but no further customizations are possible.

Navigating through the menu page, you will find meal names and prices, along with a filtering section where you can skip different ingredients and make nutrient-specific accommodations. You can either add individual items to your cart or explore bundles they have prepared for you.

This is one of the principles Epicured menu is based on, but do you know what this acronym really stands for? It’s basically a diet low in fermentable carbs, and it’s often recommended to people with IBS. But why are fermentable carbs important?

There are nondigestible short-chain carbs that are active all the time, forcing the water in our GI tract. And since these carbs are non-digestive, your gut bacteria ferment them, increasing gas production.

Therefore, these ingredients can trigger digestive symptoms like stomach pain, gas, bloating, constipation, and diarrhea. Minimizing or altogether avoiding these ingredients can dramatically improve your gut health. Make sure to check out our review of other low FODMAP meal delivery services.

Gluten-free Diet

Epicured food delivery also comes with a gluten-free label, meaning their menus exclude recipes that feature protein gluten. Their dishes don’t contain wheat, barley, or rye.

They have decided to introduce gluten-free menus because of people suffering from celiac disease and gluten sensitivity. Since gluten is a protein found in many kinds of cereal, it’s really hard to avoid it. This is basically a thing that gives bread the ability to rise and that satisfying and chewy texture.

Unfortunately, many people don’t feel comfortable eating food that contains gluten. Since this protein is closely linked to gut disorders, Epicured has decided that all their meals will be gluten-free.

Nutritional considerations are crucial to this food provider. As we mentioned earlier, they offer specially designed meals that cater for the needs of individuals suffering from celiac and Crohn’s disease, colitis, IBS, and other GI conditions.

We have to admit they have thought of everything, including licensed health professionals who monitor all production processes. Each meal contains allergen information, Monash disclosure, how many grams a certain ingredient contains, and how they would affect FODMAP status

You get to choose between pescatarian, vegetarian, and vegan diets and filter seven major allergens: soy, peanuts, tree nuts, shellfish, fish, eggs, and dairy. This meal-delivery service offers items low in calories, protein, sodium, cholesterol, and fat.

Cooking/Heating Instructions

Each package includes a single sheet of reheating instructions, explaining the best way to reheat the ordered food. This mostly mimics the information on the website and the package. While you can find everything online, the instructions can be useful in the kitchen.

Additionally, Epicured provides a couple of pamphlets on health conditions but nothing to maximize customer’s food experience. We have to say there are plenty of healthy resources on gluten-free and low FODMAP diets, food lists, and even cheat sheets, which can be helpful for people who want to learn more. It takes approximately five minutes to heat your meal in a microwave and 15 minutes in an oven, so you don’t need an advanced culinary experience.

When it comes to packaging, it’s a combination of plastic and recyclable materials. The dishes arrive in a cardboard box; however, every other piece of packaging is recyclable plastic. Packaging also includes PET plastic, cardboard insert, recyclable liner and a few ice packs featuring non-toxic waterproof gel, which you should discard in the trash.

Packaging information can be found on the Epicured website. We have to mention that individual meal containers are made of polypropylene plastic, which you can reuse, recycle and wash in a dishwasher. Overall, this company pays special attention to the environment and is really committed to using only recyclable materials.

Who is Epicured Ideal for?

Epicured low fodmap service is clinically recommended and approved for people suffering from non-celiac gluten sensitivity, colitis, Crohn’s disease, and IBS. Therefore, if you have some of the mentioned conditions, this meal delivery service can help you improve your health condition and minimize symptoms.

Who is Epicured Not Good for?

If you don’t need a gluten-free or low FODMAP diet, you might not find their options as tasty and satisfying as they should be. On top of that, Epicured meal choices can be costly when ordering food for family members or a larger group. So, that’s not something everyone can afford.
