Losing weight isn’t as easy as it seems; however, Nutrisystem has found a way to offer its customers reliable, low-calorie, specially formulated, and ready-made meals. While many people reported success, some said this program can be expensive. We investigated their operations thoroughly; let’s see what we managed to find out.
On the other hand, we have another popular weight loss delivery service that offers lifestyle transformational plans and promises quick results. Optavia ensures easy and progressive steps towards accomplishing healthier habits and contributing to overall weight loss. This service as well can be pricey, but let’s get into it and see what we can find out.

Both Optavia and Nutrisystem created their plans based on customers’ needs. However, we do believe that Nutrisystem takes it one notch higher by providing their customers with specialized meal plans according to different dietary needs.
Therefore, you can find food specially designed for diabetics since it offers a menu of low-glycemic meals and 90+ vegetarian dishes. In contrast, the men’s menu features slightly bigger portions and a higher number of calories per meal.
You will also be able to find wheat-free recipes, but keep in mind that none of them are gluten-free certified, and if you are allergic to peanuts, this is not the service for you.
On the other hand, Optavia has 63 vegetarian recipes, with plenty of shakes, snacks, and meals that are nuts, peanuts, egg, selfish, gluten, and soy-free. You can even find Kosher-certified recipes. Customers can apply filters that enable them to find food that’s high in mineral content, vitamins, or fibers.
Plenty of recipes are rich in protein, heart-healthy, and low in cholesterol. Both of these services ensure you have free access to a health coach.
These food companies claim to use high-quality ingredients when preparing their food. You will find plenty of fruits, veggies, and protein on their menu. However, we couldn’t find where they source their ingredients from. It’s simply not clearly displayed on their website.
None of the services offer organic ingredients; however, Optavia has some meals that are gluten-free certified. You can find a detailed list on their website. We feel that Nutrisystem or Optavia are transparent enough in this department, and customers simply want to have more information about the food they consume.
When it comes to Nutrisystem, they call their proteins power fuels, where each serving contains 5g of protein and between 80 and 120 calories. Next, they have a list of smart carbs with a low glycemic index and plenty of fibers, in fact, 1g of fiber per serving and between 80 and 120 calories.
Their customers are strongly encouraged to consume four servings of non-starchy veggies daily. Foods defined as free foods and extras allow you to season and prepare your food, and they don’t have more than 10 calories per serving.
However, you should be careful with extras like mayonnaise, honey, ketchup, and others because they are known to contain a bit more calories.
On the other hand, Octavia’s Optimal Weight 5 & 1 Plan contains approximately between 800 and 1000 calories per day and between 80g and 100g of carbs. Their Optimal Weight 4 & 2 & 1 Plan features between 1100 and 1300 calories per day and 85g and 100g of carbohydrates.
Nutrisystem offers a great choice of food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The majority of their dishes include American cuisine, but you can also find meals like pizza, pasta, and other American dishes. We even had a couple of Asian-inspired meals like Spicy Kung Pao Noodles and Teriyaki Chicken with Noodles.
Their menu includes Latin-inspired dishes like Mango Verde Veggie and Grain Blend. As you can see, this service does offer plenty of international flavors.
Optavia provides pretty much similar food, but they have slightly less internationally-inspired meals. In terms of variety, they offer meals, drinks, and snacks. Most of which fall into the category of American cuisine; however, you will find some Latin American, Italian, and Asian dishes.
The most exotic items we managed to find are Latin Chili Lime Chicken and Turkey Meatball Marinara. Other things are pretty much basic.
Both companies offer prepared, portioned meals and send their food in neatly organized cooler containers or boxes. But we do have to say that Nutrisystem is more transparent and provides a detailed description of its shipping policy and packaging.
Optavia ships to all US while Nutrisystem only to continental states. Keep in mind that orders shipped to Hawaii and Alaska will take between 10 and 15 days to arrive.
Nutrisystem uses biodegradable packaging, similar to a Styrofoam cooler, so once you unpack food, you can use this cooler to carry other things. Frozen food is shipped separately from ready-made items.
Optavia also uses biodegradable packaging for their individual products, and their essential plan features 17 boxes. Frozen items are also shipped separately; however, they could be more transparent in terms of packaging.

Both of these services have their benefits, including coaches who will guide you through this process and answer your questions. However, Nutrisystem employs certified and licensed dietitians; plus, if you need to speak with a specialist diabetes coach, it’s an option.
Overall, if you are looking for a food company that offers well-balanced meals and fewer obstacles, Nutrisystem is the right choice for you. Therefore, due to all these features, we need to give a slight advantage to Nutrisystem.
